The living molluscs corals divide into five main classes, each distinctly different from the others by external morphology: The first, most primitive one, Placophora is distinctive in having a shell consisting of eight plates, arranged in longitudinal pattern. The next, Gastropoda, the most variable group, is divided into many orders, each of distinct shell morphology and body anatomy. The third class, Pelecipoda or Bivalvia, have usually a twin valved shell, and bilateral symmetry. The fourth, Scaphopoda or sea tusks, is a small class, having typically an elephant tusk-like hollow shell. The last class, Cephalopoda, divided into two sub-classes, Octopuses and Squids.
