הסוג כוכבן ניכר בפוליפים הזעירים, שהתרבותם האל-מינית מחוץ למעגל הפוליפים (אקסטרטנטקולרית). המינים נבדלים זה מזה במספרי
המחיצות הפנימיות  (ספטה) העיקריות  והחיצוניות (קוסטה )  ומידת התבלטותן. המושבות קטנות בדרך כלל, וקוטר הגביעים הוא 3-2 מ"מ

                           Cyphastrea differs from other Faviidae by its extratentacular division ( asexually budding), no common walls between
                        neighboring corallites.They mainly differ by number of primary septa, relative size and degree of protrusion. Identification
                        of the 4 species in the Gulf can be done using the  attached Key adapted from JEN Veron's book "Corals of
