הגדול והמובהק בין סוגי אלמוגי הגוש, שעל שמו קרויה המשפחה כולה -
אלמוגניים. כל אחד מגביעי הפוליפים מופרד משכנו באמצעות שני קירות – הקיר שלו וזה של
שכנו.
הרבייה האל-מינית פנים-פוליפית, כלומר בשלב מסוים כל פוליפ מתרחב, ונחלק לשניים או יותר המינים נבדלים בגודל הפוליפים, צורתם וצורת הדפנות . לפחות 10 מינים במפרץ, מהם נדירים. הזיהוי יכול להעשות לפי המפתח המצורף למטה
Favia is
the most typical of all globular or crustose genus of stony corals, upon which the family is named - Faviidae
Each polyp cup (=corallite) has a surrrounding wall to itself, from which the polyp tentacles emerge at night to capture plankton. The colony polyps divide asexually and remain attached to their neighbor. The asexual reproduction is defined as intra-tentacular, meaning that each polyp corralite elongates, and divided into two daughter polyps within the tentacle circle. The species differ in size, shape and sculpture of the corallite walls and inner dividing septa.. At least 10 species live in the Gulf, some quite rare. Identification can be done using the attached Key adapted from JEN Veron's book "Corals of the World" (2000)
