. Goniastrea
differs from other Faviids by
its smaller size and narrow common walls between neighboring
corallites. It belongs to the family Faviidae. The Goniastrea species differ by size,
by polyp shape - angular or rounded and porminent hillocks and presence of "palial lobes". The colony polyps divide intra-tentacular
division. 6 species in the Gulf, among which 2 are dubious. One species - G. australiensis can be mistaken
as brain coral (Platygyra). Identification can be
done using the attached Key adapted from JEN Veron's book "Corals of
the World" (2000).
